Francis Higgins started her glass design career as a student at the Chicago Institute of Design studying under her soon-to-be husband, Michael. In 1948 they married and opened a glass studio out of their Chicago apartment. By the early 1950s the couple's wares were being sold through high end department store retailers, and in 1951 was featured in the Chicago Art Institute's "Good Design Show." In 1957 the studio was moved to a more traditional space in partnership with the Dearborn Glass Company where their work expanded well beyond what their apartment studio space could have accommodated. However the couple returned to private studio work in Riverside, Illinois, in 1966 where they continued their experimentation until Michael's death in 1999 and Francis' subsequent passing in 2004. The Higgins Glass Studio continues to operate today under the ownership and direction of longtime design associates Louise and Jonathan Wimmer.
